Car Community Good Guy Needs Your Help

Charlie Bigsby is a Longmont car guy who has helped countless Coloradans keep their rides on the road. Now he needs someone to help keep him on the road with the gift of a kidney.

Charlie grew up collecting Matchbox and Hot Wheel cars, adding motorcycles and bigger cars as soon as he could. Sound familiar? You’ve seen him at car shows; he’s the quiet guy standing next to a vintage misfit car, like a RHD Toyota or a Trabant (whatever that is). Even
his American-made rides are oddballs, like the 1958 Chevy. He’s a walking encyclopedia on many topics, from Czech motorcycles to JDM, but not the kind of person who shows off his knowledge. Ask for his help, however, and he brings superpowers.

For 25 years he’s helped people get to work by keeping their Toyotas alive at Charley’s Garage in Boulder, despite not being the Charley in the shop’s name. Outside of business hours, he works on his cars and bikes and welcomes friends to his garage for bench racing, coffee and donuts. All his friends have stories of when he helped them do this or fix that, like when he helped Dave find a small block Chevy inside a rat’s nest.

Charlie’s Health

Despite having end-stage renal disease, Charlie continues to work five days a week, keeping others going. Does he complain about having to spend 10 of every 24 hours connected to a home dialysis machine? Never. At some point, however, he’ll need another type of dialysis, which he can’t do at home. This will mean the end of going to work. While he’s listed for a kidney transplant, the deceased donor wait list is 5-7 years. A living donor transplant could happen much sooner, and free Charlie from dialysis.

How Can You Help?

You also possess a superpower: to totally transform (and likely save) Charlie’s life. Please consider donating your spare kidney. Learn how it works at PSLMC.com/LivingKidneyDonor or call 720-754-2155. Have questions they don’t answer? Talk to Marcie at 303-775-8749 or visit Facebook.com/CharliesKidney.

You can also help Charlie find a living donor by sharing his story with everyone you know. Here’s a PDF you can print or share electroncially. Thanks for reading this far!

AMS Car Show, May 15

The AMS Car Show starts at 10 am on Saturday May 15th. We previously discussed using this show as a potential May meeting: let’s make it happen! In typical RADC fasion, we’ll meet at the Fort Collins Donut Company (234 N College Ave a1, Fort Collins, CO 80524) at 8:30 am. Then we can cruise to AMS together as a group.

Rusty will have club shirts with him at the donut shop and the show, and says that he will soon make an announcement about a Father’s Day car show in June (he’s still working on the details).

Club Shirts and Dues

Everyone is welcome to join our club and get this year’s shirt. Please place your order by March 31, 2021. Here’s what this year’s logo looks like in just 4 of the 10 available colors:

Dues are $25 for the year, $15 for junior members (18 and under). This will get you this year’s shirt, a club sticker, and a vote on any official club business. For ease of shirt order, we will place just one order in April so we need your order by March 31. After that dues go down to $15 for the year; you still get the sticker and the vote, just no shirt.

Shirt colors include black, sport grey, royal blue, red, navy blue, cardinal, carolina blue, Irish green, purple and desert sand. The ink will be black, white and grey, allowing the color of the shirt to color the lower half of the bus.

Paying Your Dues

Because of current challenges attending club events, we have two dues payment options:

OPTION 1: Make a payment via PayPal (there is a small PayPal fee). When Rusty receives your payment, he’ll follow up with an email asking your preferred email address, phone number, and shirt size(s).

OPTION 2: Snail mail a check, made out to Rusty Pooler, at 36795 Brian Ave. Windsor, CO 80550. Please include your preferred email contact, your phone number, and your shirt size(s). Once received, Rusty will email you to confirm receipt. This takes a bit longer, but works fine, too.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Rusty at  oildripper69vw@gmail.com.

Monthly Activity: Jackson’s Birthday Parade – Sun, Feb 21

Hey dub nuts, for February’s club activity we are going to do a Birthday Parade for a local 12-year-old who loves VW Busses.

We will meet at the back parking lot of Spokes Inc. bicycle shop (421 Main St, Windsor) at 9 am to get prepped. There will be donuts! We will proceed wit the parade drive by at 10 AM.

I will have Hot Wheels-sized gift bags available for everyone, so each car can give Jackson something as they drive by. I will also bring a supply of Hot Wheels cars. If you have some that you would want to donate, that would be cool. I’ll also pick up some balloons on Saturday to tie on the cars.

If you could, please respond to this event post so we have a head count. I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend! And seeing some big birthday smiles!

Rare Air Dub Club Dues & Donuts

Because it can be tough to connect in person these days, we’ve worked out two ways to pay club dues this year:

  1. Make a payment to this PayPal link. (There is a small PayPal fee.) When I receive the payment I will follow up with an email to ask you for your preferred contact information and your shirt size/s.
  2. Snail mail a check, made to Rusty Pooler, to: R. Pooler, 36795 Brian Ave. Windsor, CO 80550. Please include your email, phone number, shirt size(s). Once received, I will email you to confirm receipt.

Dues are $25 for the year, $15 for junior members (18 and under). This gets you this year’s shirt, a club sticker, and a vote on any official club business. On annual shirt order will be placed at the end of April. After that dues will go down to $15 for the year and will include the sticker and the vote without the shirt.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. I will do my best to help work through them with you. – Rusty Pooler

Annual Holiday Lights Cruise: Saturday, December 12

This year we will again festoon our vintage VWs with all manner of holiday lights. It’s a good time for all and it puts smiles on so many faces. If you need help with lighting tips, post questions to our facebook page and we’re all glad to help.

As part of our route we are arranging to circle a few more assisted living facilities to help spread additional holiday cheer. We will also include a stop at City Park and run several laps around old town Fort Collins.

We will be partnering with the Larimer County Food Bank for this cruise this year as well, so please bring some non-perishable food items to share. Here are their food donation guidelines. Ed Carroll VW has kindly offered to be a collection site for donations.

We will meet at Ed Carroll (3003 S College S Ave.) around 4:00 pm to start decorating. The curise will begin around 5:30 pm.

Please note that we will be adhering to all CDPHE guidelines for this event. Face coverings are required on site, and anytime you are out of your vehicle. We ask that everyone maintain social distancing. Please do not attend if you are sick, have been in close contact with someone who is sick, or if you are unable to wear a mask for any reason.

Thanks for your help in keeping everyone healthy. We hope to see you there – this year AND next year!
